Meet the Defense Bar: Jacob Cox

Sometimes inspiration comes from a mentor, a landmark case or a formative experience. For LACDL member Jacob Cox, it started with My Cousin Vinny.

That inspiration eventually led Jacob to criminal defense, where he has found the most rewarding part of the work is simple: “Getting people another chance to do things right, whether they are guilty or not.”

Jacob began his career at the Public Defender’s Office, where he earned a dismissal on the very first file he opened. The aggravated incest case was set to become his first trial before a Motion to Quash resulted in its dismissal.

More recently, Jacob represented a client charged with Failure to Register as a Sex Offender - Second Offense. The client faced the possibility of 20 years to life if habitualized, and the initial discovery appeared to present what Jacob describes as a “slam dunk case for the State.”

His client declined a plea offer and demanded a speedy trial against Jacob’s advice.

“So, I did my job and prepared for trial,” Jacob recalls. “We took them to task.”

After the State presented its case, the client was offered time served and accepted.

The experience reinforced an important lesson for Jacob: “There is always more to the story.”

For attorneys balancing demanding caseloads, Jacob says it is critical to talk to clients and carefully review all of the discovery before trial. It also reflects the advice he gives attorneys beginning their criminal defense careers: “We don’t make the facts. We just live with them.”

Jacob credits his father and countless attorneys throughout Southwest Louisiana as his role models and mentors. He has also distinguished himself academically, graduating first in his law school class and earning 10 CALI Awards.

Outside the courtroom, Jacob enjoys going to the gym and listening to music - fitting for someone who says that, if he weren't practicing law, he would probably be a musician or journalist.

Although he has been an LACDL member for less than a year, Jacob’s perspective captures something at the heart of criminal defense work: cases that look straightforward rarely are, and taking the time to find the rest of the story can make all the difference.
